What captivates Debora Makkus on a personal level is human recilliance, the tension between vulnarability and strenght. Currently she’s working on a series of big paintings depicting nudes - lifesized - called ‘Rise’.

“You can almost sense the strenght with which the woman tries to push herself up. Makkus even captivates gravity in paint (...)  The women  are depicted in a natural way, imperfections included.

Take a look at the feet, they ‘re not smooth pedicured feet, but feet that carried the woman for years.

The strenght of Debora Makkus is that she  creates beauty with a raw edge to it’

- Renske van der Zee, Art historian  (translation)

Recently Debora Makkus also started a new series of paintings featuring girls, called ‘Sow’.
